{"id":80,"date":"2017-01-16T22:44:22","date_gmt":"2017-01-17T03:44:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/davidwkurtz.com\/wordpress\/?p=80"},"modified":"2017-01-19T16:50:13","modified_gmt":"2017-01-19T21:50:13","slug":"made-it-through-the-prelims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/davidwkurtz.com\/wordpress\/2017\/01\/16\/made-it-through-the-prelims\/","title":{"rendered":"Made it through the Prelims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now on to the Finals in two weeks. \u00a0Jill and I are both ready to head home tomorrow. \u00a0We&#8217;ve spent two weeks here with the goal of generating this little bag:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-81\" src=\"http:\/\/davidwkurtz.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2137-300x225.jpg\" width=\"303\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a couple million of my stem cells in there that will be reimplanted on February 7 after they kill off my existing immune system. \u00a0I have to say that the process is pretty intriguing to an engineer like me. \u00a0Jill was less than enthused about the temporary catheters hanging out of the side of my neck. \u00a0The procedure to insert the catheters is the worst part of the process and even that is only an hour. \u00a0From that point it&#8217;s pretty much plug and play. \u00a0Book (my nurse) hooked me up to this apheresis machine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-83 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/davidwkurtz.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2133-e1484862559830-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/davidwkurtz.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2133-e1484862559830-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/davidwkurtz.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2133-e1484862559830-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Essentially a very sophisticated centrifuge that spins my blood into layers with the red blood cells near the top, the platelets and white blood cells near the bottom, and other components separated into layers based upon their specific gravity. \u00a0It automatically finds the stem cell layer and draws it off into the bag.
